The City Walls.
In 2013 the historic city walls celebrated their 400th birthday. They are the only set of intact city walls remaining in Ireland and one of only a few in Europe.
The walls were built in the 17th century as defenses for early settlers and are approximately 1 mile in circumference, they form a walkway around the inner city. A number of companies such as Martin Macrossan City Tours (http://www.derrycitytours.com) and City Sightseeing tours (citysightseeingderry.com ) offer guided tours of the city, including the walls and are well worth using to find out about the unique history of this special city feature.
Derry is one of the few cities in Europe that never saw its fortifications breached, withstanding several sieges including one in 1689 which lasted 105 days, hence the city's nickname, The Maiden City.
St Columbs Park.
Located a short walk from the hotel across the Peace Bridge, St Columbs Park is nestled amongst the banks of the River Foyle, comprising of 70 acres of parkland in a historic demesne. With an edventure play area and orienteering trail families can get lost in the wonders of this beautiful park. Wrap up the day with a sweet treat from Cafe in the Park, a hidden gem within the walled gardens.
Cregan Country Park.
For the adverturous families, Cregan Country Park is a watersport and outdoor persuits facility located within a short 5min drive from the hotel. Inflatable water assault course, kayaking and aqua rollers to name just a few of the activities that can be booked in advance to ensure you don't miss out.
Riverwatch Visitor Centre & Aquarium.
The Riverwatch Visitor Centre & Aquarium is a great tourist attraction located just outside Derry City Centre and with Free Admission it's a must do for families and visitors. Watch the fish swim about the tanks and learn about our local wildlife. We have lobster, crabs, starfish, coalfish, blenny’s and lots of other marine and freshwater fish and shellfish. We are continually changing our livestock so it's always worth another trip! There are free activity packs to keep the kids entertained and all indoors, it’s a great wet weather option too!
Giant's Causeway
The Giant’s Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption. It has inspired artists, stirred scientific debate and captured the imagination of all who see it. You can walk to the stones for free, but the car park is reserved for those buying tickets for the Visitor Experience, which includes a guided tour and use of the audio guides, available in 11 languages.
Take a walk with giants and explore one of the incredible UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Perfect for couples and families with spectacular scenery and mythical tales.
Glenveagh National Park.
A short 55min drive from the City Hotel through the hills of Donegals leads you to the amazing Glenveagh National Park. Nestled between rugged mountains, pristine lakes and tumbling waterfalls, Glenveagh is one of six national parks found in Ireland. With various walking trails, Glenveagh Castle and the Castle grounds, a fun filled day in nature can be had for all the family.
